Law Office of David Herndon Building

The building we know today as the Market on the Square/Law Office of David Herndon building sits on an area that used to be home to 3 different buildings.

The building on the far left was Hall Hardware Company. It was in downtown Moultrie from 1894 until 1958. Hall Hardware Company literally grew up with Moultrie. It was opened a year before the General Assembly passed an act to reincorporate the Town of Moultrie as the City of Moultrie.

The M. D. Allen building was the middle building. Not much is known about it.

The 3rd building on the right housed the Moultrie Cafe. This beloved eatery is where the “Coffee Club” originated. Many important business transactions were discussed over a cup of coffee at this popular gathering place. The Moultrie Cafe was here from around 1912 up until 1932 when Arwood Drug Store moved in. Arwood Drug Store remained here until 1959.

In 1959 the Hall Hardware Company building and the Arwood Drug Store building were torn down to clear the space for G. C. Murphy Company to be built. This is the building that still stands today. G. C. Murphy opened in May of 1960. It was here until 1982.

Next came Ponder’s The Index.

Followed by Antiques on the Square in 2001.

Antiques on the Square occupied the left half of the building until 2006, when the space became Market on the Square.

The right half of the building now houses the Law Office of David Herndon and has done so since 2004.
